In The Old Days

Markup and text processing languages are getting long in tooth:

  • SNOBOL (nearly 60 years old)

  • Icon (nearly 50 years old)

  • HUGO (40 years old)

  • OmniMark (30 years old)

  • Perl (30 years old, although Perl 6 is an important step forward)

  • XSLT (20 years old)

Of these, only HUGO, OmniMark and XSLT provide the convenience of rule-based programming.
